Shifting our Focus
|
| |
We respond to what we focus on. When we focus on and appreciate
what we have we are happier and more relaxed. When we focus on
what we lack (or what we haven't done) or what isn't working we
experience greater dissatisfaction and stress. It's the timeless
adage of interpreting the glass as half empty or half full and
then responding accordingly.
I saw a feature story on a man in his 20s who has been blind
since birth and has also been unable to walk (due to shortened
arms and legs). When interviewed, he said: "Big deal! So I can't
walk or see. I'm so incredibly lucky to have musical gifts, to
sing and play instruments." He was so full of joy. To him the
glass was actually full - half full of his gifts and half full of
possibilities.
So even though we may want more security, or money, a different
job, a partner, or better relationships, we can more fully
appreciate our lives for what they are right now. Would we give up
our health for a million dollars, give up our ability to walk or
to see? Not a chance.
We can shift our focus and enjoy life more. Yes, it can be that
simple. It's not always that easy, but we can make it a priority
to appreciate and love what we have (the people in our lives, our
well being, our skills, our work, our homes, etc.) and to focus on
the good. In doing so, we will not only be happier, but we will
also draw more positive things to us, and we will also be able to
give more to those around us.
Wishing you peace, love and abundance.

Tools for Changing our Perspective
|
| |
Some of the best tools and practices I've found for shifting our
focus and for creating positive energy are: receiving bodywork
(massage and Reiki), working with hypnosis, practicing meditation,
turning off the news, working with a counselor, exercising,
spending time in nature, and the Emotional Freedom Technique.
I'd also recommend the book, Ask and it is Given by Esther and
Jerry Hicks. This book is particularly helpful because it gives a
range of exercises based on where we start on an emotional scale.
The authors recognize that we don't go from grief or despair to
joy in an instant but that we can take steps towards moving up the
scale and increasing our sense of well being. |
