What are the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success?

Dr. Deepak Chopra's book the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success was published in 1984 and is one of his best selling books.  The seven laws in this book can be seen as laws of nature and these laws of nature apply to our lives.  Subsequently Doctors Deepak Chopra and David Simon (cofounders of The Chopra Center) co-authored the book The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga.  In the latter book the seven spiritual laws focus on the essence of the law while also including specific applications to the practice of Yoga.   I have used some of my own wording for the description below - but most is take from the above listed books (so credit goes to Dr. Deepak Chopra and Dr. David Simon).

Essence of the Laws

Three Ways to Enliven
.

Sunday

    Law of Pure Potentiality

  Om Bhavam Namah

"I am absolute existence"

This law states that our essential nature is pure awareness, pure consciousness, being.  When we get in touch with our true selves we experience greater peace, creativity, freedom, enjoyment and flow in life.

  • Practice stillness, silence, meditation
  • Spend time in nature
  • Practice non-judgment

Monday

Law of Giving and Receiving

Om Vardunam Namah

"I am the nourisher of the universe and the universe nourishes me."

This law states that we are always in dynamic exchange with the universe.  There is a rhythm in giving and receiving.  When we give to others we receive.  When we nourish our bodies we receive greater well-being.

  • Just by observing our breath we notice the inflow/receiving and the giving/outflow that is nature of life
  • Have gratitude for your life.
  • Acknowledge your needs.

Tuesday

Law of Karma or Cause and Effect

"Om Kriyam Namah"

"My actions are aligned with cosmic law"

In the physical world there is both action and the consequence of that action.   As we sow so we reap. We make many, many choices and take many, many actions each day (though many of them habitual), but we can become conscious choice makers and make choices that are uplifting for us and for those around us.

  • Become aware as you make the many choices that comprise each day.
  • Ask what the consequences are of the choice in front of you.
  • Listen to your heart and your body for guidance

Wed.

Law of Least Effort

"Om Daksham Namah"

"My actions achieve maximum benefit with minimal effort."

Nature flows with effortless ease.  We don't have to struggle so much and force solutions onto problems.  We can learn to live with more ease and flow.  We can do less and accomplish more.

  • Practice Acceptance.  Accept this moment as it is.  Accept your body as it is.
  • Take responsibility for changes you'd like to create.
  • Release defensiveness - there are many valid points of view

Thursday

Law of Intention and Desire

The universe is comprised of energy and information as we are- so when we release intentions in the quiet of our mind we influence the quantum field.  And provided that our intentions and desires are in harmony with the universe and the other laws there is an infinite organizing power that goes to work for us to bring about their fulfillment.

  • Be clear of your intentions and desires (writing them down, speak them, think them).
  • Trust the outcome and that there is a higher reason when our desires don't manifest as we expect them to.
  • Practice present moment awareness.

Friday

Law of Detachment

"In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty. In the wisdom of uncertainty lies freedom from our past, from the known, (the prison of past conditioning). And in our willingness to step into the unknown, the field of all possibilities, we surrender ourselves to the creative mind that orchestrates the dance of the universe."  Deepak Chopra

  • Practice detachment - be flexible.
  • Embrace uncertainty, embrace the unknown.
  • Step into the field of pure potentiality, infinite possibilities.  "Don't limit the IS" as Richard Bach writes in Illusions. There is so much more than we can yet imagine.

Saturday

Law of Dharma or Purpose in Life

Our purpose in life is three-fold.  One is the connection to our true nature, our unbounded pure awareness, our "being."  Another aspect of Dharma is to cultivate our gifts and talents and to share them.  And the third is to be of service.

  • Practice witnessing awareness, pure awareness
  • Cultivate your gifts and talents
  • Ask how you can serve.
